Types of Sports Injuries:
Sports injuries can vary greatly and depend on the mechanism of injury and severity, and they can lead to many different symptoms and complications.
· Knee joint injuries: Symptoms include pain, swelling, and stiffness. The ligaments, tendons, or cartilage can be affected.
· Dislocations: Joint dislocation is also a common injury in sports; it happens with the shoulder, knee, hands, etc.
· Fractures: A slight crack or even a completely broken bone, usually as a result of a high-force impact or stress to the bone.
· Soft tissue injuries: trauma or damage inflicted on a muscle, ligament, or tendon.
· Tennis elbow: You don’t have to play tennis to get a tennis elbow (golf is also a common culprit). Tennis elbow is one of several “injuries of repetition.
· Back Pain: Your back and spinal column undergo some level of stress with almost every sports activity. Over time, this stress may accumulate into inflammation around the vertebrae and back muscles, sometimes causing injuries to the discs and frequently causing upper or lower back pain.
· Concussion: Most common in contact sports like football, a concussion occurs when a sudden impact to the head causes the brain to lurch inside the skull, sometimes damaging the tissues holding it in place.
· Groin Pull: The muscles in your inner thigh, or groin, are used to help pull your legs together. A groin pull injury typically occurs when you suddenly change directions.
· Hamstring Strain: Your hamstring is made up of three muscles and is located behind your knee. A hamstring is commonly pulled when you overuse or overstretch your muscles. This type of injury can be avoided.
Treatment for Sports-Related Injuries?
The treatment of sports injuries depends on the type of injury. Dr. Aniruddha Deshmukh examines and diagnoses the patient clinically. Depending on severity and symptoms, the treatment varies.
· R.I.C.E. method: If the sports injury is minor or mild, the R.I.C.E. method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) with appropriate anti-inflammatory medication is given.
· Pain relief: Painkillers, such as Paracetamol, can be used to help ease the pain. Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as tablets or creams can also be used to ease pain and reduce swelling.
· Surgery and procedures: Minor sports injuries don’t require surgery, but severe injuries require either repair or reconstruction surgery for injured soft tissue. This may include arthroscopic as well as open surgeries.
· Physiotherapy: Rehabilitation is a scientific recovery program where modalities and exercises are used to improve range of motion, strengthen the surrounding muscles, and return to total or near total normal function.
